Miva Maiden Convocation — “7 Days To Go”

Script and direction · June 2026

Seven days out from Miva’s first convocation, we needed a piece that carried the weight of the moment without a single graduate on screen yet. I wrote it as a shot-by-shot direction document: extreme wide on an empty theatre, one distant light-switch click, a slow push-in on the MC alone in the seats. Aisle lights firing sequentially as he walks, the auditorium waking up around him. Camera rising to reveal the scale. A drone pullback on the final line.

The script specifies frame, movement, lighting behaviour, audio and animation for every beat, so the crew had nothing left to interpret on the day.

The direction document

Scene 1

Camera: Extreme wide. Full theatre in view.
Audio: Dark, deep theatre ambience and silence. One distant light switch click.
Visual: Reveals MC standing alone in the middle of the seats.

Shot

The camera slowly pushes in (gimbal or dolly) with a medium close-up frame.

MC: “Every great story… begins with one moment.”

Movement: Camera moves backwards as MC walks down the centre aisle. Aisle lights begin turning on sequentially, and practical theatre lights slowly illuminate to reveal the full auditorium waking up.

MC: “A moment that rewards ambition, resilience, and possibility.”

The camera rises to reveal the massive scale of the theatre.

MC: “That moment is in 7 days. As Miva’s pioneer students take centre stage. At Miva’s Maiden Convocation Ceremony.”

The camera follows as MC climbs the stage steps. Medium close-up that slowly circuits the MC, then shifts to a wide reveal.

MC: “Miva students walk a different path. They learn beyond walls. They show up. Stay consistent. And they’ve proven that quality education can travel farther than distance. They did the work.”

Music: should begin building harder here.

Steady camera following MC through the various rooms of the theatre, to show its beauty and create a journey.

MC: “This is possibility. This is opportunity. This is education without limits.”

Camera: Close-up.

MC: “This… is Miva.”

Camera: Extreme wide, MC centred perfectly.

MC: “In 7 days, we celebrate a generation that chose a different path, on one of Nigeria’s most iconic stages.”

Camera pushes in. Music reaches an emotional climax.

Camera: Extreme close-up. Direct eye contact.

MC: “Congratulations… Class of 2026.”

Ending shot

Fast drone pullback for full reveal of the theatre exterior.

MC: “The world is yours. Go make your mark.”

Hard cut back to convocation identity animation.

Directing testimonials

uLesson & Miva · 2024 – 2026

Testimonials look easy and aren’t. The skill is getting an unrehearsed answer out of someone who’s nervous, then cutting it so it doesn’t sound coached.

uLesson Tab 2 — siblings who study together. Directed end to end. Rather than shooting 2 separate testimonials, I built it around the relationship: siblings sharing a tablet, learning together, the product almost incidental to the bond.

Miva — why 3 students chose us. 6 reasons across 3 students: quality, flexibility, affordability, access, uninterrupted study, and a personal success advisor. Cast for contrast in programme and personality, each line cut short enough to land before the scroll.

Owned end to end

Written, shot, edited, posted

Seven pieces. No crew, no budget line, concept to post. Across the same 6-month period I shipped 149 videos against a target of 120 — roughly 25 a month, sustained.

Shot outside the Abuja campus and built around a sound that was peaking that week. The format was doing the work, so the edit stayed out of its way.

A walkthrough of the Lagos Study Centre showing the space and what students actually get to use. Shot on a single visit, cut to sixteen seconds.

A day in the life of an MBA student, built for YouTube Shorts. The retention is the number I care about here — most people stayed rather than swiping.

A 15-second trend edit. Light, fast, and made to travel rather than explain anything.

The 2025 Matriculation highlight, cut fast and trend-led. The rare short-form piece that actually moved people toward the site.

A quick glimpse of the 2026 Convocation, cut and posted the same day while the moment was still live.

One proud moment from the same ceremony, published as a collab with the Alumni Network so it carried across both audiences.

Remote creative direction

Miva Jos Study Centre launch invite

I developed the script, planned the shots, and briefed the team remotely before filming. After the shoot, I reviewed the footage, identified what needed to be reshot, and guided the final production through to completion. I wasn’t physically on location or operating the camera.

Recurring formats I created

uLesson & Miva

A format that outlives your attention is worth more than a hit. Both of these were built so someone else could pick them up and keep running them.

The Miva FAQ Series. Admissions questions the team was answering one at a time, turned into short TikToks that answer them at scale.

The uLesson Learning Series. A repeatable teaching format built to run indefinitely rather than as a one-off — over 20 episodes, averaging a minute each, across Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

Langtang Community Centre launch. Highlight VO carrying a scholarship announcement from Miva’s founder for indigenes of his hometown. Two jobs in ninety seconds: report the launch, and land the scholarship news without flattening the emotion in it.

The script

Tone: Exciting and upbeat. Video clips: key highlights from the event.

“We officially launched the new Miva Community Centre in Langtang today, and it is now open to the public! This centre is equipped with modern computers and fast WiFi to support your learning journey, a student lounge to connect and network, and admissions officers available to answer all your questions.

During the launch, our founder, Sim Shagaya, announced a special partial scholarship for the indigenes of Langtang, a legacy dedicated to opening doors and uplifting his hometown.

(Include a short clip of Sim talking about the scholarship)

With this partial scholarship, Langtang indigenes can access world-class education for any of our programmes. To make it even easier, they have flexible payment options and the full support of the community centre as they begin their journey.

The future is bright, and this is just the beginning. Reach higher with Miva.”

How I work

  1. I write to the shot, not to the page. If a line can’t be filmed, it doesn’t survive the first draft. Every script I hand over specifies frame, movement and audio, because a crew shouldn’t have to guess what I meant.

  2. I cast for truth over polish. A slightly awkward real answer outperforms a smooth scripted one every time, and audiences clock the difference in under 2 seconds.

  3. I build the hook before anything else. The first second decides whether the other fifty-9 get watched.

  4. I design formats, not one-offs. A series anyone on the team can continue is worth more than a film only I could make.

  5. And I stay through the edit. Direction that stops at the shoot is half the job — the cut is where pacing, hold and payoff actually get made.

  6. Then I go back to the retention curve. Watch time, hold rate and where people drop tell me what the next script needs to fix, and I report it plainly enough that the whole team learns from one video rather than just me.
