Several times a week I go down a rabbit hole I did not plan on.

Some of them last twenty minutes. A few have lasted years. This is the part of me that likes to chill.

Watching

I like long stories with people making decisions they can’t take back.

I also have a weakness for beautiful television, complicated women, supernatural nonsense and shows that somehow convince me that watching eight seasons in a row is a reasonable use of my time. You’d enjoy these with a bag of popcorn.

  • Good Girls poster

    Good Girls

Three suburban mothers rob a supermarket and turn out to be surprisingly good at it. Underneath the comedy, it’s about money, desperation and what people do once they’ve run out of options.

  • Outlander poster

    Outlander

A woman falls through time into 18th-century Scotland. Beautiful, very long, and I have strong opinions about several of the decisions these people make.

  • Ginny & Georgia poster

    Ginny & Georgia

A mother and daughter who are far more alike than either of them will admit. Sharper than it looks from the outside.

  • Power poster

    Power

Everybody in it is one decision away from ruining their life, and most of them make it. Most of them then proceed to make another bad decision.

  • Interview with the Vampire poster

    Interview with the Vampire

The entire catalogue. Gorgeous to look at and one of the most interesting things anyone has done with vampires in a long time.

  • The Blacklist poster

    The Blacklist

Raymond Reddington is one of the best characters ever written for television. I will not be moved on this.

  • Game of Thrones poster

    Game of Thrones

Yes, including the ending. I’ve made my peace.

  • The Originals poster

    The Originals

The Mikaelsons are a thousand years old and still cannot hold a family meeting without someone getting daggered. Always and forever, apparently.

  • The Vampire Diaries poster

    The Vampire Diaries

The whole catalogue. I know. I love it.

  • Vikings poster

    Vikings

History, violence and people doing terrible things with complete conviction. Ragnar is the reason I stayed.

  • Vikings: Valhalla poster

    Vikings: Valhalla

A century on, a new set of people doing terrible things with the same conviction. It had a lot to live up to.

Reading

While I don’t claim to be an avid book reader just to be impressive, these were eye-openers.

  • The Alchemist cover

    The Alchemist

Paulo CoelhoA shepherd walks a very long way to learn something he could have worked out at home. I still think about how what we go looking for is usually already in us.

  • Rich Dad Poor Dad cover

    Rich Dad Poor Dad

Robert T. KiyosakiThe book that made me realise nobody had ever actually taught me how money works. Not everything in it holds up, but the question it plants does.

  • Purple Hibiscus cover

    Purple Hibiscus

Chimamanda Ngozi AdichieI grew up Christian, so I recognised far more of this than was comfortable. Devotion and control can look identical from the outside.

  • Think Big cover

    Think Big

Ben CarsonReading it young, at exactly the age where being told your circumstances are not your ceiling actually rearranges something.

  • The Potter's Wheel cover

    The Potter’s Wheel

Chukwuemeka IkeA spoilt boy sent away to be straightened out. Discipline you resent at the time is often the thing that shaped you.

  • The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck cover

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck

Mark MansonI only have so much attention to spend. Choosing what to spend it on turns out to be the whole decision.

  • Half of a Yellow Sun cover

    Half of a Yellow Sun

Chimamanda Ngozi AdichieBiafra through the people living it rather than the history of it. How ordinary life keeps going in the middle of something enormous. Worth reading.

  • Sugar Girl cover

    Sugar Girl

Kola OnadipeOne of the first books I remember reading at a very young age. I am adding it here for nostalgia.

  • The Passport of Mallam Ilia cover

    The Passport of Mallam Ilia

Cyprian EkwensiRevenge carried across decades and a continent. How long a person can hold onto something, and what it costs them.

Things I keep thinking about

I don’t necessarily want to become an expert in all of these things. I just love learning about stuff.

AI & Technology

What happens to work when machines become genuinely capable?

Psychology

Why do people do the things they do?

Economics

How money, markets and countries actually move.

Business

How companies are built, how they make money and why some survive while others don’t.

The Universe

Because apparently understanding marketing wasn’t enough.

Politics

Mostly because pretending politics doesn’t affect your life is a luxury.

Spaces

I have no formal training in architecture or interior design. This has not stopped me from having opinions.

I rearrange rooms constantly. I draw floor plans for houses I don’t own. I’ll spend an unreasonable amount of time thinking about where a window should go, whether a living room is actually functional, or why someone decided that particular room needed to be that shape.

I like spaces that feel lived in, not just decorated. A beautiful room that makes everyday life inconvenient is not a beautiful room to me.

I’m particularly interested in homes, hospitality, co-working spaces and places built around community. I like thinking about how people actually use a space: where they sit, where they work, where they naturally gather, where they get some privacy and what makes them want to stay.

One day I want to build some of these ideas rather than just draw them in my planner.

Until then, I’ll keep rearranging furniture.

Travel

I want to see as much of the world as one lifetime allows. Ideally, all of it. I want to wake up somewhere completely unfamiliar every other month and explore beautiful places properly.

The long-term goal is simple: see the world and share my experience of it with the world too.

There are places worth crossing a continent for and I intend to enjoy the inconvenience.
